SBEC International School last week participated at the Robotters International Festival Competition in Austin, Texas in the USA with 3 of its students accompanied by their Robotics mentor and IT Manager at SBEC, Mr. Hassan Sillah. The team emerged second at the Festival’s robotics competition.

The Robotters International Festival held on the 17 and 18 February 2020 is one-of-a-kind event for people who love robots. The event features K-12 STEM tournaments, consumer robot showcase and an epic award show.

The three students namely:

Abdukarim Demba — Form 2

Abdoulie Njie — Form 4

Malick A. Jammeh — Form 2

competed in building an EV3 Lego Mindstorm Robot. The competition included 20 teams from multiple countries around the world. The Gambia was the only African country to participate.

The proprietor of SBEC International, Ayesha Njie Nyang and the management team welcomed the champions at the Banjul International Airport this Sunday. She hailed this as a victory for not only Sbec International School but The Gambia as a whole.

Speaking in a telephone interview from the US, Mr. Sillah said: “We were points behind the team that took first. We had just four hours to build and program the EV3 Lego Mindstorms and complete while all the others had two weeks to practice. Also, this is the first time we are using the EV3 Lego Mindstorm”.

He explained that the Robotics Hub – The Gambia has chapter clubs in schools in the Gambia and SBEC is one of the schools that has the club.

The students received medals and certificates as recognition for their wonderful achievement and will be allowed free entry into subsequent events at the Robotters International Festival.
